RACHAEL G. FARBER is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kansas (KU).  She received her B.S. in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University, Ph.D. in Chemistry from Loyola University Chicago, and was a Kadanoff-Rice Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago from 2018 – 2022.  Rachael began her independent career at KU in 2022 where she established her ultra-high vacuum surface science research group.  Rachael’s research interests include understanding the fundamental processes governing heterogeneously catalyzed chemical transformations, the electronic and physical properties of thin films and 2D materials, and scanning tunneling microscopy studies of novel surfaces.

Rachael has been an active AVS member since 2015.  As a graduate student, she participated in regional and national meetings, giving oral and poster presentations.  She was also selected for the Nellie Yeoh Whetten and Morton M. Traum graduate student awards in 2017.  She continued her involvement in AVS through her postdoc as the Energy Transition Focus Topic Co-Chair, Early Career Professionals Committee Co-Chair, and as a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.  Since joining KU, Rachael has stayed involved with AVS through her involvement as Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, serving as a committee member for the Professional Leadership Committee, and as Chair and Co-Founder of the AVS Great Plains (Tornado Alley) regional chapter.
