IVAN PETROV is a Professor of Physics at Linköping University, Sweden and Visiting Professor of Materials Science at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He was a Professor of Materials Science and Principal Research Scientist at the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory (1998-2010), and Director of the Center for Microanalysis of Materials at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Ivan earned his Ph.D. in physics from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and received the Doctor Honoris Causa Degree from Linköping University, Sweden. He has published over 350 refereed papers cited > 22000 times with h-index of 73.

Ivan is an Editor of Surface and Coatings Technology and member of the editorial board of AVS Quantum Science. Ivan was elected to the Executive Committee of the Advanced Surface Engineering Division (ASED) in 1991 and in 2019. He chaired the Division in 2001. He has been a program committee member for many years at both the AVS International Symposium and ICMCTF, serving as 1998/99 ICMCTF Program/General Chair. He served as AVS Publications Committee Chair for 8 years and as 2015 AVS President. Ivan is a Fellow and Honorary Member of AVS and received the 2009 Bunshah Award from the ASED, and the 2013 AVS John Thornton award "for his seminal contributions in determining the role of low-energy ion/surface interactions for controlling microstructure evolution during low-temperature growth of transition-metal nitride layers."

In 2017 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Taiwan Association for Coatings and Thin Film Technology. He has been elected as Chair of the Surface Engineering Division of IUVSTA 2007-2022
