The technical structure of AVS is organized as a matrix. Members can participate in one or more Divisions or Technical Groups, each of which is focused around a major topical area. Members may also participate in Chapters and Student Chapters, which are regional organizations that focus on local area needs.

AVS Ohio Chapter

Advancing the Science and Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing

The Ohio Chapter, as the name indicates, is the local American Vacuum Society (AVS) chapter for the state of Ohio. The Ohio AVS is a non-profit organization designed to promote science and vacuum-related science education. Members of the Ohio AVS are from academic, government, and commercial institutions and are engaged in research, applied vacuum technology, and vacuum equipment sales. Chapter activities include periodic newsletters and co-sponsored local events, and Early Career Scholar Award. In addition, the Ohio AVS sponsors an Ohio high school science teacher to attend the Science Educators' Workshop held each year at the AVS National Symposium.

The AVS comprises 10 technical divisions, 2 technical groups, 16 local-area chapters, and about 6,000 members worldwide.
