AVS membership is based on a calendar year and the collection of dues for the upcoming calendar year begins in late November of any given year. AVS is a member society of the American Institute of Physics with additional benefits for our members.

Transfer Categories for Long-Term Members

Emeritus Member: Emeritus Membership may be obtained by any American Vacuum Society member who has been a full member in good standing for a minimum of 30 years, and is at least 62 years of age and can demonstrate that he or she is retired from full-time employment.  Members in good standing who are disabled and retired from full-time employment with less than the minimum membership time noted above, but who have at least 5 years of continuous full membership, may make special application to the Membership Committee for Emeritus Membership. Honorary Member: Recommended by the Awards Committee to the Board of Directors for distinguished service to the Society.

Fellow: Recommended by the Awards Committee to the Board of Directors to recognize members who have made sustained and outstanding technical contributions in areas of interest to the Society.

Full Member

Any person who has a Bachelor's Degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university and six full-time years of applicable employment experience in fields of interest to AVS.

Technical Specialist

Any person who has a minimum of two years full-time employment or experience as a technical specialist within fields of interest to AVS or a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a relevant science or engineering field. This person should carry out work that assists in the advancement and development of the related sciences. May also work in a teaching laboratory where support is given to science teachers, lecturers and students. The technical specialist provides all the required support needed for a lab to function effectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

Early Career

Any person working in fields of interest to the AVS and are within five years of receiving their highest degree. Upon the 6th year beyond highest degree, current full member dues will be imposed.


A full-time college student, undergraduate or graduate with expressed interest in the scientific and technical areas relevant to AVS. Student status must be certified by the student's advisor. Student membership may be renewed annually by having an advisor verifying student status. If verification is not received, full membership dues will be collected. There is a 5 year cap on eligibility.
