SALLY McARTHUR commences as the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in February 2026, where she will lead the research vision for the University and oversea the graduate school, Wellington Ventures and a range of other research and innovation activities across the University. She was the Director of the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia between 2022-2025 and prior to this worked at Swinburne University of Technology 2008-2022, University of Sheffield (2002-2008), University of Washington (2002-2002) and CSIRO (1996-1997 and 2017-2021). Sally works with industry, community, and government to ensure we have the research ecosystems and skilled workforce that is needed for both fundamental research and its translation to address industry, government and community needs.
In her personal research, Sally works at the interface between biology and technology specializing in surface engineering and characterization and has additional experience in the battery and composites manufacturing sectors. Sally has extensive experience undertaking research in collaboration with industry as well as supporting new models of research training that integrate students into industry and start-up cultures.
A member of the AVS since 2000, Sally was elected as an AVS Director for 2019-2020, and a Trustee from 2021-23 including being Chair of Trustees in 2023. Sally was the Editor of the AVS journal Biointerphases from Dec. 2017-Dec. 2021, and prior to this she was an Associate Editor for two years, and a founding member of the journal editorial board. Sally has been an active member for the Biomaterial Interfaces Division undertaking a range of roles, including Executive Committee (2005-2007), Treasurer/Secretary (2007-2008), Program Chair-elect (2009), Program Chair (2010), and Division Chair (2011). She was a member of the AVS Professional Leadership Committee from 2009-2014. Sally was the Australian representative on the organizing committee for PacSurf since its inception (2014-2024).
