MARCUS HANS is Managing Director of Structural Materials Laboratory at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, group leader of atom probe tomography at Materials Chemistry, RWTH Aachen University, Germany and visiting scientist at the Tandem Laboratory of Uppsala University, Sweden. He received his Dr.-Ing. degree in 2017 from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. His research expertise in spatially-resolved composition analysis by atom probe tomography as well as focused ion beam and advanced electron microscopy contribute to the design of materials with enhanced thermal and chemical stability. He has published more than 90 papers which have been cited ~1600 times (h-index 24, m-index 1.8).
His most recent research interests are in sustainability-related aspects of surface engineering.

Marcus has been attending ICMCTF since 2014, and received the silver medal ICMCTF Graduate Student Award in 2017. He served as chair of the sessions 'Functional Oxide and Oxynitride coatings' (2018–2019) and 'Boron-Containing Coatings' (2020 2023). In 2024 he became chair of the 'Topical Symposium on Sustainable Surface Engineering' and co-established also the session 'Circular Strategies for Surface Engineering', which has been very well attended and sparked exciting discussions. Moreover, in 2023 Marcus joined the Long Range Planning Committee and co-initialized development of modern ICMCTF program structure. He is also member of the Editorial Board of Surface and Coatings Technology and co-organizer of the 100th IUVSTA workshop 'How sustainable are thin films and thin film processing? Pathways towards responsible surface engineering', to be held from October 27 31 in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
