SCOTT WALTON is the Head of the Plasma Applications Section in the Plasma Physics Division at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington DC. He received a B.S. in physics from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in physics from the College of William and Mary (1998).
Scott came to NRL as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate in 1998 and has been a staff member in the Plasma Physics Division since 2002. As Section Head, he manages the Plasma Applications Laboratory and research programs related to the production, characterization, and use of low temperature plasmas in applications for both low- and high-pressure environments. The programs cover topics ranging from fundamental to applied and have provided the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from academia, national laboratories and industry to address challenging but exciting problems.
Scott has more than 110 peer-reviewed journal articles, 13 patents, and has given more than 60 invited talks on these and related topics. He is a fellow of the AVS and a fellow mentor of the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC). Scott has been a member of the AVS for 26 years. Within the AVS, he has served on the Plasma Science and Technology Division (PSTD) Program Committee since 2016, as the PSTD Executive Committee Secretary (2018-2019), and as the PSTD Executive Committee Chair in 2021.
Other leadership positions include serving as a Director on the Boards of Jenoptik Defense, Inc. (2014-2015) and the SVC (2008-2014), as well as the Executive Committee of the SVC Board (2012-2014). He was the SVC’s Technical Conference Program Chair (2012-2014) and Co-Secretary of the 60th Gaseous Electronics Conference in 2007. He is presently the Director of Education for the SVC.
