ANDRE ANDERS has worked in the fields of plasmas, plasma-surface interactions, thin film deposition, plasma and ion sources, and many related areas for almost 40 years. He studied in Poland, East Germany, and the former Soviet Union, graduating with a PhD in Physics from Humboldt University in Berlin. After the Fall of the Berlin Wall, he moved to California. His research, primarily conducted during his tenure as Staff Scientist and later Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California (1992–2017), has resulted in three books, several book chapters, multiple patents, and over 350 peer-reviewed journal publications, with more than 25,000 citations (h-index 80, Google Scholar).
André is the Founder and CEO of Plasma Engineering LLC, a California-based consulting firm. From 2017 to early 2025, he served as Director and CEO (Vorstand) of the Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM) in Leipzig, Germany, where he led a team of 150 scientists and technical staff focused on advancing surface engineering for applications in ultra-precision engineering, energy-related coatings, biomedicine, membranes, and nanotechnology. In 2017, André was also appointed Professor of Applied Physics (W3) at Leipzig University. In addition to his scientific and academic roles, André has been active in the scientific publishing community, serving on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Thin Solid Films, Surface and Coatings Technology, Applied Physics Letters, and Journal of Applied Physics. From 2014 to 2024, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Applied Physics, overseeing the editorial process and maintaining the journal’s high reputation and relevance.
Currently, he serves as the interim Editor-in-Chief of Physics of Fluids. Since the early 1990s, André has been actively involved in professional organizations such as AVS, APS, IEEE, MRS, and SVC, taking on leadership roles including Secretary, Treasurer, Committee Chair of an IEEE co-sponsored series of symposia, and Chair of the Executive Committee of the AVS Advanced Surface Engineering Division. His contributions have been recognized through election as Fellow of AVS, APS, IEEE, and the Institute of Physics (UK), as well as through several international awards, including the R.F. Bunshah Award of the ICMCTF, an AVS conference held annually in San Diego, CA.
